Tian Tan Buddha
Hongkong
Located on the Ngong Ping plateau on Lantau Island, The Tian Tan Buddha is the largest outdoor, seated, bronze Big Buddha statue. Constructed in 1993 with 202 bronze pieces, the Tian Tan Buddha weighs over 250 tons. It is positioned on a lotus throne surrounded by 8 smaller bronze statues representing immortals, atop 268 steps. Every 20 - 30 steps there is a big step that can be used for resting. It attracts over a million visitors per year.
The view is great from the top of the mountain, where you can see the Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Peak, and the Ngong Ping Village. You can also go to the second level where there is a museum with paintings and ceramic plaques depicting Buddha's life and teachings.
Buddha's birthday is the busiest time of the year, which usually occurs between the end of April and the end of May. If you don't like large lively crowds then its best to avoid these months.
Nearby attractions include the Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping Village, Lantau Peak, and Hong Kong Disneyland .
