Description

This 5-hour guided hike blends steep climbs, expansive views, wartime relics, and close but respectful wildlife encounters. The hike is led in a small group with a focus on clear pacing and safety.

You will meet your guide at the 7-Eleven in Marina Cove, Sai Kung. After a briefing covering route, safety, and weather, the hike begins with a warm-up along bamboo and village paths before ascending steeply. The first major stop is Tung Shan’s overlook, featuring a staircase and rocky sections that reward you with skyline views across Sai Kung, Kowloon East, Beacon Hill, Lion Rock, and Kai Tak’s former runway.

The route continues along the ridge, following sections of the Wilson Trail 4 and MacLehose Trail 5 toward Lion Rock Country Park. Views expand to include Kowloon, northern Sha Tin and Tai Wai, while Black-eared Kites are often spotted overhead. Along the way, you pass WWII stone pillboxes from the Gin Drinkers Line with brief historical context.

The main highlight is the scramble to Lion Rock Head itself, where granite outcrops offer panoramic views of Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the New Territories. The guide allocates time here for photography and a snack break.

You may encounter macaques near Kowloon Pass and Tai Po Road; observing without feeding or engaging is essential. The group follows Leave No Trace principles, staying on established paths and respecting heritage sites.

The hike concludes with a descent through Lion Rock Country Park, ending at Lion Rock Park Community Garden near Lok Fu MTR station. Your guide will advise on the best exits and nearby transport options for your return.
