Description

Meet your guide at the boundary of a lower-income district in Kowloon to begin the tour. Your first stop is a local real estate agent’s office to learn about subdivided units and their role in Hong Kong’s housing market. You will also receive an introduction to the city’s dependence on real estate.

Next, visit an actual subdivided unit to experience grassroots living conditions. Inside, observe a cage home and see how the original floor plan has been altered to accommodate multiple residents.

Walk from Prince Edward to Sham Shui Po, identifying various alternative housing types along the way. Enjoy herbal tea at Lui Seng Chun, a historic tenement house designated as a declared monument that reflects Hong Kong’s colonial subdivision practices. (Note: Lui Seng Chun is closed until April 2026.)

At Sham Shui Po, observe how informal businesses operate under their own rules in Hong Kong’s oldest and poorest district. Continue to the gentrification boundary, where from a municipal building's rooftop you can see many rooftop houses built on Tong Lau tenements to house additional residents.

The tour ends at SoCo, a local charity assisting families in Sham Shui Po. Your guide will share a personal story related to the housing market, and you will have the option to make a donation to support the community.
