Ser Wong Fun is one of those places that you almost feel shouldn’t exist anymore — and that’s exactly what makes it so unique. Tucked away on a slope and easy to miss, the restaurant feels more like a hidden relic than a destination. It’s small, a bit chaotic, and honestly looks like a hole-in-the-wall bar (“boteco pé-sujo”) rather than a historic culinary institution. The environment is, without sugarcoating it, rough (at best). It’s cramped, worn down, and far from comfortable. On top of that, it’s expensive for what you get in terms of setting. But you don’t come here for the ambiance — you come for the experience. And what an experience it is. This 130-year-old establishment serves something you’re unlikely to find anywhere else: traditional snake dishes. It’s peculiar and undeniably memorable. The snake meat itself is surprisingly good — tender and flavorful — but it really shines in the snake soup, which is absolutely worth trying. All in all, Ser Wong Fun is not about comfort or refinement. It’s about stepping into a piece of history and trying something truly different. If you’re in Hong Kong, it’s a must-go — just set your expectations accordingly.

A wonderful experience at this historic restaurant in the heart of Hong Kong. It’s amazing to visit a place that has been around for about 130 years. When I arrived, the staff clearly let me know that the restaurant would be closing in about 30 minutes. I really appreciated the transparency and the clear communication, and since I mainly came to try their famous double-boiled soup, I was happy to dine quickly. Because it was late in the day, only three soup options were left, but the one we chose was excellent: rich, comforting, and clearly prepared with great care. We also ordered a pork noodle dish. The wok hei was incredible 👌🏻one of the best wok aromas I’ve ever experienced. The pork and bean sprouts were cooked perfectly with great texture. The only small issue was that the dish itself was a bit bland, almost as if it was missing seasoning, but the cooking technique was outstanding. Overall, it was still a memorable visit with quick service, and impressive wok skills. A great place to experience a long-standing Hong Kong culinary tradition.
